Rising demand of Edge Computing

Rising demand of Edge Computing

Edge computing is a highly distributed computing framework that compute, moves and stores resources. Companies are facilitating edge computing for several solutions that reduces latency, optimizes bandwidth, introduce entirely different features, speeds processing, and capabilities that aren’t possible with data centers.

The ability of data analytics on an edge network enables certain features and capabilities which are crucial for advanced digital frameworks like industrial 4.0 revolutions. Industrial revolution includes adoption of advanced technologies such as highly integrated supply chains, IoT software, machine learning, artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality, mobile connectivity, augmented reality, digital twins etc. These technologies are adopted for several applications such as 3D fabrication, robotics, medical devices, connected video cameras, autonomous vehicles, smart home automation and much more.

Rising internet penetration through mobile and broadband connectivity with growing digitalization and globalization of the business processes

Rising demand for the edge computing market around the globe owing to surge in shifting of moving from the conventional servers towards cloud computing for storage, and radically redefining business and life is expected to strengthen the market growth. Data processing from the source of data generation are being crucial which requires edge devices for working efficiently and smarter to handle tasks that would have been unimaginable. Increasing data generation due to rising internet penetration and surge in broadband connectivity with surge in the mobile internet connected population around the globe have impelled the demand for the edge computing market. For instance, according to the global system for mobile communications mobile, the mobile connected people reached 3.8 billion due to accelerated digital inclusion and increased connectivity using mobile internet. Also, the latest data estimated as per the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), around 21.7 billion connected devices and the number are growing fast. Thus, it created massive demand for the edge computing market which enables connected devices to process data closer, and provides an alternative way of sending the data to a centralized cloud for processing.

Booming data generation due to rapid mature internet growth across the globe with surge in the adoption of the digital platforms

Edge computing devices can process data natively and with the help of an edge network sensor in the local area through central networks and nodes. As a result edge computing processes less cumbersome data requests at the local level that helps to freeing up bandwidth for larger data processing needs in existing data centers. Rising demand for the data processing virtually at every corner of the globe due to surge in the data generation around the globe with surge in the internet penetration and rising digitalization is expected to strengthen the edge computing market growth. For instance, according to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), globally on average over 74,500 GB of data is being generated over the internet every single second due to more than half of the world population has begun to participate online in the global digital economy. Thus, edge computing plays vital role in managing, optimizing internet devices and web applications to bring computing closer to the source of the data. This help to minimize the requirement for long distance communications between client and server that ultimately reduces latency and bandwidth usage using the edge computing.

Edge computing meets several advanced technology such as AI/ML, IoT demand to solve the real time problem

Edge computing is specially used for data processing of the connected smart and IoT devices to reduce the required time and a shorter latency period for the device, and consequently, the user. Edge computing can provide a response to a user’s query more quickly without requirement of data to travel from a distant cloud data center. As rising IoT devices and AI software adoption which requires quicker response time is being fulfilled by the edge computing. Edge computing helps to foster rapid computation, network access, and increases the storage capabilities closer to the user’s data requirement.

Machine learning at the edge enables quicker, faster decision-making and drive the real-time personalization. Rising launching of new software solutions based on the machine learning and AI for solving the real time problems of the organizations is expected to strengthen the edge computing market growth. For instance, on May 27, 2019, Nvidia launched edge computing platform for bringing real-time AI for the global industries.  Several leading computer manufacturers have adopted the NVIDIA’s EGX Platform that offers Edge Servers for instantly Real-Time Streaming Data using AI for several industries including healthcare, telecom, manufacturing, transportation and retail. The amalgamation of edge, machine learning and AI will further drive real-time personalization that ultimately faster decision-making.

Further, edge computing will foster the demand in future due to rapid adoption of the advanced technologies such as IoT devices, machine learning and AI. For instance, as per the prediction by one of the leading firm NVDIA, there will be more than 150 billion machine sensors and IoT devices continue to stream the data by 2025 that will drive the demand for edge computing to process data in real time from these sensors.

Rising trend of work from home during the pandemic drives the demand for edge computing

Edge computing is preferred in remote locations, where there no or limited connectivity to a centralized locations. Edge computing has created huge opportunity for data processing and storage at a localized level except in some developing regions due to lack of facilities when it comes to edge implementation. In areas with fewer people and financial or technical resources, there will be lack of active edge devices and local servers on the network. Many of areas have fewer skilled IT professionals who can launch and manage a local edge network’s devices. Data center technology is designed for 5G while the edge computing require increased performance, new data standards and open-source software. Increasing huge internet data generation around the globe due to surge in internet penetration around the globe is expected to strengthen the market growth. For instance according the World Economic Forum an estimated there is around 44 ZB of accumulated data generated in the fiscal year 2020 with 44 sextillion bytes that is 40 times more bits of data have been generated during the pandemic which drastically accelerated the edge computing demand across the globe.
